Jennifer L. Johnsen
Jennifer was born and raised in Bear Lake, Michigan, a small town located just southwest of Traverse City. She earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science from Michigan State University in 1999. Following her graduation, Jennifer moved to Detroit and began law school at Wayne State University. She received her Law Degree from Wayne State. Jennifer passed the State Bar Examination and was admitted to practice in Michigan in December 2003. Jennifer was a member of the Student Trial Advocacy Program (STAP) and worked at the Free Legal Aid Clinic (FLAC). She also volunteered at Covenant House, an organization dedicated to the prevention of teenage homelessness. She began her legal career as a Staff Attorney with Legal Services of South Central Michigan. She focused her work on representing victims of domestic violence and low-income community members. In addition to diligently representing her clients, Jennifer spearheaded the successful establishment of a divorce clinic for victims of domestic violence. In addition, she was a member of the Calhoun County Domestic Violence Coordinating Counsel. Jennifer was also the Secretary for the Calhoun County Bar Association.
In March 2005, Jennifer accepted a position as an Associate Attorney with DAWN (Divorce Attorneys for Women) in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where she continued focusing her efforts on representing women in need. In August 2006, Jennifer, along with Erica, opened the boutique law firm, Johnson & Wikander. In August 2010, Jennifer became a founding member of Velzen, Johnsen & Wikander.
Jennifer's passion for family law and desire to help those in need, along with her instinctive entrepreneurial drive, pushed her to live out her life-long dream of opening her own legal practice. Jennifer is dedicated to aggressively, compassionately, and ethically representing her clients. She focuses on protecting her client's interests and pursing the best result.
